Between increased security, voting began for the first phase of municipal elections in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday.
Two main regional parties, the National Conference (NC) and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) boycotted the election. Separatist leaders have also called for boycott of elections.
Today, 1122 wards of 1122 wards will be held in the first phase of municipal elections.
An unprecedented security arrangement has been made by the state officials and the Election Commission to ensure peaceful elections. Also, all the candidates have either been provided hotel or individually cluster protection in the valley.
Polling started at 7 o'clock in the morning and will end at 4 o'clock today.
According to the Election Commission, today a total of 1283 candidates will contest in 422 municipalities.
Counting of votes will be done on October 20.
